Oprah's latest email

I'm lucky enough to be on Oprah's email list and about once a month she's sends out a new message (and yes, they are actually written by Oprah herself). Here's her latest email: Dear Friends of Fall, On my way back from Africa, where I've spent the past week teaching my soon to be graduating 12th graders, everything I wish someone had told me before I graduated. I bow to teachers everywhere who care about their students, prepare the curriculum and do their own homework to make sure they are prepared. It's a lot of work. I received this email from one of my students today which makes it all worth it: Mom Oprah I would like to thank you so much for the wonderful, exciting and mind blowing workshop on life and it's ways. I thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come to South Africa, far away from your home. I have learned so many life lessons that I surely will be taking along with me through the many years to come. The one lesson that I definitely learned was that "It is okay to make mistakes". The reason it struck me so much is because I have had a shadow belief where I believed and told myself that I need to satisfy others and show them that I am good. What I did not realise along the way, is that I then stepped away from certain opportunities because I was too scared to take risks and to make mistakes and disappoint others. But after Life 101 I now know that IT IS OKAY TO MAKE MISTAKES. Another lesson that I learned is that other people will have their opinions about me and I will need to learn to give meaning to it or not. Thanks M. Wow, that warmed my heart. That one email made the whole exhausting week to the bottom of Africa so worth the trip and rewarding. I'm not a good sleeper under normal circumstances. So my body does not adjust to time change well. So it's been a sleepless week. I had meeting after meeting...then taught class in the late afternoon, so girls wouldn't miss their regular classes. Mistakes mean move in another direction. And other people’s opinions don't define you. Finding the courage to create the life you say you believe in, building from strength to strength, not giving away your power, especially not doing stupid things in the name of pleasing other people. That was my focus for 12 graders. I'm returning to U.S. excited to be starting Lifeclass 8/7 central this week on OWN. Followed LIVE on the Web. I hope to see you on Facebook, Oprah.com...and if you have it the iPad app. For Lifeclass we're moving on to even bigger lessons that speak to the power of the heart. How not to be controlled by your ego. Letting Go of the past. Allowing the Truth of your life to set you free. Using your strength as a weapon against defeat. And Joy Rising moments that will remind you to feel and create your own. All things I've learned and continue to grow and expand my understanding of how life works. I want your world to open up, and you be enhanced, and stimulated by new ways of thinking about yourself. Doing this on TV and the Web is a bold move. I know it. But what would life be without taking a risk! See you Monday nite Oprah Photo credit VTK Productions via Flickr

No Matter What Your Tickets Cost, This Was Worth Every Penny
Fans of U2 got a major treat on Friday night when the band appeared at Madison Square Garden. Bruce Springsteen, the king of New Jersey, was at the concert, and joined U2 on stage for a song or two. It turned into a singalong for the entire venue as everyone joined in on "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and then "Stand By Me." What a night. These fans will have a story to share for a long time.

Cecil Speaks From Beyond
There's been a major uproar over the so-called sport killing of Zimbabwe's beloved Cecil the Lion by a dentist from Minnesota. There are calls for the dentist to be brought back to Africa to face charges. The dentist has been forced to shut down his dental practice. And a huge debate about hunting has sprung up worldwide. And now, this. An animal psychic claims that Cecil responded to her when she reached out to him. His words, she said, moved her to tears. The words of a large cat who apparently learned to speak - and quite eloquently - in his transition to the afterlife... Hey, it happened in Lion King, right? So why not here? This was inevitable: an animal psychic relays Cecil the lion's final message for humanity http://t.co/SSFibIAihK pic.twitter.com/nG4e0YxqR9 — Vox (@voxdotcom) August 2, 2015

If She Could Have Another Job, the First Lady Would Be...
First Lady Michelle Obama sat down for a series of interview questions over the weekend with a rapper named Wale. I'm sorry, I don't know him, so here's his Wikipedia page... Anyway, he sat with the president's wife and asked some questions written on index cards. FLOTUS was very personable, and dare I say, radiant? The best answer came to this question: "If you had the opportunity to have another occupation, what would it be?" I won't spoil it for you. Watch it for yourself...     You asked. The First Lady and @Wale answered. #ReachHigher A video posted by First Lady Michelle Obama (@michelleobama) on Jul 30, 2015 at 6:55pm PDT

Fun Fun Fun with the Beach Boys
Jimmy Fallon and the gang at The Tonight Show are big fans of music history. So it's no surprise that they'd be able to get their hands on some vintage recordings of the first draft of The Beach Boys' big hit, "Fun Fun Fun." Okay, so in truth, it was Jimmy and Kevin Bacon having a little fun with the way the song might have come together. Let's just say, things got stuck at the hamburger stand... Check it out - it's very funny, and very well done too. Jon Stewart's Secret Meetings with Barack Obama
Can it be true? Jon Stewart, who departs this week as host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show, was taken to task last week by a variety of news outlets who reported two secret meetings between the talk show icon and the President of the United States. Why? Because the president needed Jon's support in promoting his social and political agenda. Right. Yeah, that happened. Jon had a lot of fun tearing the story to pieces.   The Daily Show Get More: Daily Show Full Episodes,The Daily Show on Facebook,Daily Show Video Archive

"It's All Over... Just... Like... That!"
UFC fighter Ronda Rousey could well be the toughest person on the planet. Saturday night in Rio De Janeiro, she took on hometown favorite Bethe Correia in a championship fight There'd been a lot of trash-talking prior to the event, mostly on the part of the challenger. I guess when you're fighting on home turf, a bit of swagger is expected, right? That didn't sit well with Ronda, so she made fast work of her opponent. The highlight reel is about 18 seconds. That's all you get when the fight lasts just 35 seconds.

This Safe Slide is Sick
When I say the slide you're about to see is sick, that means it's good. Yeah, I don't understand that either, but that's got nothing to do with it. Over the weekend, Kendrys Morales of the Kansas City Royals made the most brilliant move at home plate and/or was the luckiest guy in Missouri - your pick. Morales is the DH for KC - not known for his speed. He's on second base when his teammate hits a single, and he's off to the races. The throw from the outfield was dead-on, and Morales should have been out. The catcher grabbed the ball - perfect throw, perfect catch - and went for a sweep tag of Morales foot. But Morales pulled up short, the tag missed, the momentum took the catcher's glove out of the base path, and Morales just stepped around him to score. Incredible. Especially when you consider that Morales once broke his ankle jumping on home plate to celebrate a grand slam. Watch the Vine...

Keep Your Enemies Close
There's a lot of buzz about Johnny Depp's upcoming film, Black Mass, and there's a new trailer out for it. He's playing Whitey Bulger, one of the most notorious gangsters of our time, a kingpin in the Boston crime scene before becoming a fugitive for years. Johnny's performance looks pretty intense, and he's surrounded by a pretty amazing supporting cast, not the least of whom are Benedict Cumberbatch and Kevin Bacon. Check it out.   (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

How Can There Be a New Dr. Seuss Book?
Dr. Seuss, the man behind "The Cat in the Hat," "Green Eggs & Ham" and so many other childhood classics, passed away almost 25 years ago. So when you hear there's a "new" Dr. Seuss book, you sort of scratch your head, right? Story is, the Doc wrote it in the late 1950s and tossed it into a box. Someone just found the book in the box, and the book in the box is now on the charts... Sorry, sort of got into a rhythm there. It's called "What Pet Should I Get?" The folks at Jimmy Kimmel Live! thought maybe they could present the new old work in a more modern vein, so they invited Tyler the Creator to rap the words - dressed, for some reason, as the Cat in the Hat. Watch it, and see if it pains you as much as it pains me.

This Time, Kate Winslet's the Queen of the World
Kate Winslet, the actress who rocketed to fame as Rose in Titanic, taped an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls recently. She did some flying, and some climbing, and at one point, recreated a famous scene from the movie. No, not the charcoal drawing one. The one where she's at the bow of the boat, telling Jack that she's flying. She does the same thing in this clip, only this time, she's leaning over a rope or a cable on the side of a mountain...(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Prepare for an adventure made for the movies.
