My Coming Out Story

I received an email from one of our listeners:
  • Hey Kidd! I'm 17 years old and I'm messaging you to see if you could give me some advice. I listen to your show every weekday morning and I hope to hear something from you. I'm gay, and I'm struggling with getting the confidence to tell my parents. I was wondering if you could share your story, or give some advice on what to do. Thanks Kidd!!!

Here was my response:

I came out to my parents when I was in my 40's
The problem of my family not knowing who I really was had festered in me to the point that I was having suicidal thoughts. I knew I had to do it, and my friends kept telling me your mom always knew. I decided to break the news. It hit my Mom like a brick wall, she cried, my super religious Baptist Dad said, "You're my son, I still love you," and my four siblings I could tell just needed some time to process this announcement. I gave them time and didn't dwell on it nor did I bring it up. Dad has since died, Mom loves me more than ever, always wanting to know who else she might know that is gay, and my siblings have no issues whatsoever. This heavy boulder is no longer on my shoulder and I and my family are as happy as any family.

It will work out, you can do this
My son now 18 told us when he was 16 yrs old. I his mother always knew his father was crushed. We have worked through 2 yrs just being open to each other's discussion. His father has now changed his views based on wanting our son "happy" and able to live a full life. We've told him what ever you choose for yourself be positive, thankful for the goodness you have in your life. We all have talent in many different areas. Find what makes you happy. YOU deserve happiness!

Glad you shared your struggle
We all have tendencies toward what is wrong, we are born sinners. Please realize that you may have a desire for this sinful deed but you do have a choice whether to act on your inclinations. The act of homosexuality is a sin. You have a choice to commit the act just as you have a choice to lie, steal, cheat, kill, etc. WE all struggle with evil tendencies but they can be defeated. What you do is a choice. Its not like that song that says "I can't change, even if I try," That song is wrong and defeatist! You can change, if you try, if you want to. Homosexuality is a choice. Not a good one. Yes, God is Love. Yes, God hates sin. Homosexuality is a sin. You can win. Make the right choice.

To: "Glad you shared your struggle"
Being homosexual is not a "choice" any more than being heterosexual is. Gay men don't one day choose to be attracted to other men; straight women don't choose to be attracted to men. Lesbians don't choose to be attracted to other women; straight men don't choose to be attracted to women. Not everyone believes in the Bible; there are also many, many interpretations of scripture, including more loving and embracing views than yours (which are psychologically and physiologically harmful). This isn't about religion; it's about human biology. Kudos to Kidd. The young man he helped wouldn't be struggling if people like you, "Glad you shared," weren't demonizing gay people and suggesting it's all a choice to begin with.

Great Advice
Kidd, you gave some great advice to the kid, many thanks. I may have been a bit more cautious, not knowing the situation. I think if a young man or woman still living at home wants to come out to their parents, if there is any chance they may be kicked out or subjected to bad treatment, there needs to be an exit plan in place. I read too many stories of kids on the streets because they came out, or were outed, and have no place to go. Frankly, if there is no place to go, I would recommend not coming out until there is a plan in place. And to the holy roller who commented above, get over yourself. You judging other people is a sin, if there is such a thing.

Glad you shared your struggle
People have been led to believe that homosexuality is not a choice. As I said the inclination may be there but the act itself is a choice! Otherwise your saying I, being heterosexual, have no choice but to have sex with a woman. That is not true. The act is a choice. And I don't hate or demonize anyone. I have friends who are gay but they know what I believe and we agree to disagree. Your view says in the area of sexuality people have no choice in who or what they will have sex with. And as far as scripture goes, yes there are many interpretations, but if you read a translation you will find all references to homosexuality call it sin. Sorry, that's not what I think but what God says.

Father of a Gay son
As the father of a gay son, I can tell you that it is as difficult for your parents to hear as it is for you to tell them. I had a very hard time accepting the fact and probably said some things that made it even harder for my son. In the end, though, my love for him is what really matters and his happiness is what is most important to me. Just bear in mind that it is a huge mental adjustment for your parents to make and it may take some timee.

To: "Glad You Shared Your Stuggle"
Both of your comments leave me feeling troublesome. The fact that you can't understand that the way one feels both emotionally and physically, calling ti a "Choice". so here is a situation. You say that even if you are attracted to the same sex, you "Choose" to sleep with them... and that that in its self is a SIN.. But had they decided to go against those feelings and do what the church or scripture deems "The Right Thing To Do"... no say your daughter/son marry's someone that has made this choice to be untrue to themselves and their partner. They have Chosen to be dishonest. LYING is also a SIN. I honestly think you should keep your twisted bible thumping opinions to yourself because it is twisted religious people like your self that stand at the gates and get asked that old time question... is there a GOD. sure there is something of a higher power... but its not a bigot like yourself. your disgusting and you should really take a look at a bible and read it in depth. its a story. and most of it is a lie...

Truly the Time of Their Lives
James Corden is starting to grow on me as a perfectly fine late night television host on The Late Late Show. He's a decent joketeller, and handles interviews well. But some of the stunts and skits he puts together and pulls off are as good as some of the things Jimmy Fallon's doing on The Tonight Show. Check out this little farewell he did with Idina Menzel at the end of last week.

May the Geek Be With You
Monday, May 4th is semi-officially designated as Star Wars Day. Why? Because "May the Fourth" Be With You. Get it? Anyway, to celebrate, a group of fans built an $800 Lego Star Destroyer, and then destroyed it, dropping it nose-first onto a floor while filming the destruction in slow motion. They even point out the demise of the Imperial representatives aboard the craft. Yup, that's Geek to the Ultimate Power.

More Than Words - Take 2
Earlier this week on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon and Jack Black did a shot-for-shot recreation of the music video for Extreme's "More Than Words." They do a pretty decent job with the song. Check it out.   It's even more impressive when you compare it to the original. Pretty amazing.

Um, What the HECK Just Happened?
Imagine you're minding your own business, maybe driving down the street, maybe taking a walking tour of historic Boston... And suddenly, some guy in this tighty whities and maybe a pair of shoes starts dancing in a semi-insane manner in front of you. That's what happened in some towns in Massachusetts while a band called Binary Finary recorded what appears to be a music video...? Give it a look - just be careful that no one important's looking over your shoulder.

And then she won the showcase too - featuring a sauna and a treadmill. Great. Except Danielle has no legs and is in a wheelchair. You think maybe the folks at TPIR could have taken a moment to switch out the showcase...?

That Was Then, This is Later
David Letterman is wrapping up his 33-year career in late night television this month, so a lot of A-list guests are being crammed into the final shows. Steve Martin is one of them - a frequent guest and friend of Dave's. He visited the Late Show with David Letterman a couple of days ago, and showed a couple of videos he'd compiled as an homage to his friend - one showing selections from his past, and one showing what his life will be like post-retirement. Grab the tissues, folks!

What if Westeros Had Cellular Service?
The folks at Entertainment Weekly keep track of all forms of entertainment - movies, television, live events and more. In season, it seems like Game of Thrones is one of the magazine's favorite shows, and they do love to poke their fun. Check out this very funny episode of Game of Phones - imaging how King Tommen might manage his kingdom on a cell phone. If you haven't seen this week's episode yet, don't pay too close attention to the text messages - there's a spoiler or two in there. But by the seven gods, this is funny stuff!

Stunt Impossible?
The latest offering in the Mission: Impossible franchise (Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation) comes out at the end of this month. From the trailer, it seems like more of the same. Impossible MIssion Forces led by Tom Cruise, working on the outside of the agency that's supposed to employ them. Lots of action, and plenty of things blowing up. But check out the stunt at the end of the trailer, with Tom hanging onto the outside of a plane as it takes off. The buzz is that Tom did that stunt for real, on his own. I hope someone got a shot of his insurance agent's face while that was going on, don't you?

Idina's Kid Hates "Let It Go!"
Idina Menzel visited Ellen the other day and naturally, the conversation turned to Frozen, the animated movie where she plays the part of Elsa, the snow queen. She of course sings the movie's big song, "Let It Go!" And she revealed to Ellen that her son really doesn't like it when she sings that song. In fact, she says he hates it. But it's sort of her bread and butter, and she'll be singing it on her upcoming world tour. She demonstrated how she'll sing it in Japanese, and after a couple of false starts, she did a pretty good job with it. Check out the video.

Now This is a Birth Announcement
By now, we all know that Prince William and Duchess Kate welcomed a baby girl into the world over the weekend. And we all know her name is Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Signed, sealed, delivered. Godspeed and all that, what? But here, for me, is the coolest part about the royal birth. It was announced by an official town crier. Dressed in old-style finery and holding a scroll, the crier stood on the hospital steps and made the official announcement. And I don't care, but I think that's pretty darn cool! (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); How old school! Town crier Tony Appleton announces the birth of Duchess Kate's baby girl at St. Mary's Hospital in London. Posted by USA TODAY on Saturday, May 2, 2015

Jonny, We're Gonna Miss You
Jon Stewart is one of the smartest most juvenile news presenters out there. Check out his recent discussion on The Daily Show about the newest Democratic candidate for president, Bernie Sanders, a veteran senator from Vermont, as John compared and contrasted him against Hilary Clinton. It got especially juvenile when he drifted off into a recap of former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton earning up to $75,000 for speeches about diarrhea. Tony Allen of the Memphis Grizzlies took some major heat from the hometown fans of the Golden State Warriors during yesterday's first game in the second round of the NBA finals. During a time-out, the Warriors Junior Jam dance team took to the floor to perform for the crowd. Oblivious to that, Tony walked right out onto center court while the kids were dancing. That earned him a huge chorus of boos. Not only then, but every time he touched the ball during the rest of the game. In case you're wondering, the Warriors won the game, 101 - 86. Instant karma, anyone?

What Was Worse, the Fight or the National Anthem?
Not a lot of people were huge fans of the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight on Saturday night. But even fewer were fans of the way Jamie Foxx treated the singing of the National Anthem prior to the fight. The video was all over You Tube and Facebook yesterday, but now it's been taken down - "due to a copyright claim by CBS." But Jamie took a trashing all over social media - especially on Twitter. Here's one non-fan, who posted a video of herself doing the Jamie Foxx version of the National Anthem, showing she's ready should the call ever come!     Practicing the Jamie Foxx version of the National Anthem (for when that opportunity comes knocking.) Let's Just Flush This Idea, Why Don't We?
Okay, this is hilarious in a very juvenile way. A city councilman in Georgetown, Texas excused himself from a council meeting for a bathroom break. He forgot that he was wearing a body microphone, and also forgot to turn it off. So, while the council's business continued, this councilman's business was broadcast throughout the chamber. Too bad this guy's not on a city council in California - sounds like he could solve their drought problem single-handedly... The Last Witch Hunter Borrows from GOT?
Just caught the trailer for Vin Diesel's upcoming supernatural thriller, The Last Witch Hunter. It's due for release this October, so starting the teaser trailers six months out sounds about right. But watching it, I couldn't help but think about Game of Thrones. Several of the sets are reminiscent of the sets from GOT, plus Rose Leslie appears to be playing Vin's sidekick. That would be Rose Leslie, who played Ygritte, the wilding woman with whom Jon Snow fell in love. Sure, it's based in modern-day New York, but watch it and tell me you don't see the GOT overtones.
