My Coming Out Story

I received an email from one of our listeners:
  • Hey Kidd! I'm 17 years old and I'm messaging you to see if you could give me some advice. I listen to your show every weekday morning and I hope to hear something from you. I'm gay, and I'm struggling with getting the confidence to tell my parents. I was wondering if you could share your story, or give some advice on what to do. Thanks Kidd!!!

Here was my response:

I came out to my parents when I was in my 40's
The problem of my family not knowing who I really was had festered in me to the point that I was having suicidal thoughts. I knew I had to do it, and my friends kept telling me your mom always knew. I decided to break the news. It hit my Mom like a brick wall, she cried, my super religious Baptist Dad said, "You're my son, I still love you," and my four siblings I could tell just needed some time to process this announcement. I gave them time and didn't dwell on it nor did I bring it up. Dad has since died, Mom loves me more than ever, always wanting to know who else she might know that is gay, and my siblings have no issues whatsoever. This heavy boulder is no longer on my shoulder and I and my family are as happy as any family.

It will work out, you can do this
My son now 18 told us when he was 16 yrs old. I his mother always knew his father was crushed. We have worked through 2 yrs just being open to each other's discussion. His father has now changed his views based on wanting our son "happy" and able to live a full life. We've told him what ever you choose for yourself be positive, thankful for the goodness you have in your life. We all have talent in many different areas. Find what makes you happy. YOU deserve happiness!

Glad you shared your struggle
We all have tendencies toward what is wrong, we are born sinners. Please realize that you may have a desire for this sinful deed but you do have a choice whether to act on your inclinations. The act of homosexuality is a sin. You have a choice to commit the act just as you have a choice to lie, steal, cheat, kill, etc. WE all struggle with evil tendencies but they can be defeated. What you do is a choice. Its not like that song that says "I can't change, even if I try," That song is wrong and defeatist! You can change, if you try, if you want to. Homosexuality is a choice. Not a good one. Yes, God is Love. Yes, God hates sin. Homosexuality is a sin. You can win. Make the right choice.

To: "Glad you shared your struggle"
Being homosexual is not a "choice" any more than being heterosexual is. Gay men don't one day choose to be attracted to other men; straight women don't choose to be attracted to men. Lesbians don't choose to be attracted to other women; straight men don't choose to be attracted to women. Not everyone believes in the Bible; there are also many, many interpretations of scripture, including more loving and embracing views than yours (which are psychologically and physiologically harmful). This isn't about religion; it's about human biology. Kudos to Kidd. The young man he helped wouldn't be struggling if people like you, "Glad you shared," weren't demonizing gay people and suggesting it's all a choice to begin with.

Great Advice
Kidd, you gave some great advice to the kid, many thanks. I may have been a bit more cautious, not knowing the situation. I think if a young man or woman still living at home wants to come out to their parents, if there is any chance they may be kicked out or subjected to bad treatment, there needs to be an exit plan in place. I read too many stories of kids on the streets because they came out, or were outed, and have no place to go. Frankly, if there is no place to go, I would recommend not coming out until there is a plan in place. And to the holy roller who commented above, get over yourself. You judging other people is a sin, if there is such a thing.
11/11/2013 10:26AM
Glad you shared your struggle
People have been led to believe that homosexuality is not a choice. As I said the inclination may be there but the act itself is a choice! Otherwise your saying I, being heterosexual, have no choice but to have sex with a woman. That is not true. The act is a choice. And I don't hate or demonize anyone. I have friends who are gay but they know what I believe and we agree to disagree. Your view says in the area of sexuality people have no choice in who or what they will have sex with. And as far as scripture goes, yes there are many interpretations, but if you read a translation you will find all references to homosexuality call it sin. Sorry, that's not what I think but what God says.

Father of a Gay son
As the father of a gay son, I can tell you that it is as difficult for your parents to hear as it is for you to tell them. I had a very hard time accepting the fact and probably said some things that made it even harder for my son. In the end, though, my love for him is what really matters and his happiness is what is most important to me. Just bear in mind that it is a huge mental adjustment for your parents to make and it may take some timee.

To: "Glad You Shared Your Stuggle"
Both of your comments leave me feeling troublesome. The fact that you can't understand that the way one feels both emotionally and physically, calling ti a "Choice". so here is a situation. You say that even if you are attracted to the same sex, you "Choose" to sleep with them... and that that in its self is a SIN.. But had they decided to go against those feelings and do what the church or scripture deems "The Right Thing To Do"... no say your daughter/son marry's someone that has made this choice to be untrue to themselves and their partner. They have Chosen to be dishonest. LYING is also a SIN. I honestly think you should keep your twisted bible thumping opinions to yourself because it is twisted religious people like your self that stand at the gates and get asked that old time question... is there a GOD. sure there is something of a higher power... but its not a bigot like yourself. your disgusting and you should really take a look at a bible and read it in depth. its a story. and most of it is a lie...

Best No School Announcement Ever!
Moses Brown is a college prep school in Providence, Rhode Island. Yesterday, as Blizzard Juno bore down on the Northeast, promising up to two feet of snow and more for the region, MB's Head of School, Matt Glendinning, announced that there would be no school today. But he didn't just call the local radio and TV stations. He went all out and produced a no school announcement to beat all no school announcements, and posted it to the school's YouTube account. To the tune of "Let It Go," ladies and gentlemen, I give you "School Is Closed!"

The Winner of Super Bowl XLIX is...
For the 12th year in a row, the folks at EA Sports - makers of the Madden NFL video games - have played out the Super Bowl on their game. They plugged in the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, and the winner is... Well, maybe I shouldnt say. Why spoil the fun? Watch the highlights and game summary, if you like. Or, just wait until this Sunday for the real deal. All too silly for you? Consider this. In the past 11 years, the Madden NFL team has gotten the outcome right 8 times...

Olivia Culpo, who represented the USA in the Miss Universe Pageant in 2012 and who took home the crown, was in attendance for the 2015 pageant this weekend. She was on the arm of her boyfriend, singer Nick Jonas, and he posted this picture to his Instagram page of the two of them together. The picture - and others like it of Olivia - have set the internet on fire. Well, sort of. Entertainment Weekly calls it the "most cleavage-baring dress we've ever seen." Others are wondering how the dress is able, seemingly, to dey the law of gravity. The Daily Mail in London says that Olivia was "a stand out donning a strapless frock that left many jaws on the floor." Personally, I think like she's lucky to have survived that encounter with the shredder...     #missuniverse A photo posted by @nickjonas on Jan 26, 2015 at 5:51am PST

Tell Us What You Really Mean
The Dropkick Murphys, the Irish punk rock band out of Boston, made their feelings very clear on Twitter yesterday. Wisconsin's governor, Scott Walker, used one of their songs, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," as his introduction music at the Iowa Freedom Summit on Saturday. And they simply do not want him to do that. Ever again. Because they "literally hate" him. But their tweeted message at least expressed a little love for the guy, so maybe they're just busting his chops... Right? @ScottWalker @GovWalker please stop using our music in any way...we literally hate you !!! Love, Dropkick Murphys — Dropkick Murphys (@DropkickMurphys) January 25, 2015

Where's the Rim Shot When You Need One?
I'm not really sure who to blame on this one: the reporter who brought it up, or the press secretary who continued to entertain the question. In a White House press conference on Friday, a reporter asked press secretary Josh Earnest what the president's reaction to Deflategate was. Yes, that was a serious question. Clearly, the nation has nothing else on its mind. Josh had a pretty good comeback. We'll give him credit for that, but then seriously, move along. Not these reporters. Let's take the opportunity to grill a guy who has nothing to do with the story, and reallly no business weighing in on it.

Azalea Something, Right?
A contestant on Jeopardy committed a hip-hop faux pas, confusing Azealia Banks with Iggy Azalea.   Ordinarily, that wouldn't be a big deal. Easy enough to confuse them based on the common-sounding names. Except the two are sworn enemies. Maybe that's a bit extreme. Let's just say they don't like each other much. At all... The contestant, Nicholas Berube, must have felt bad about it, because he created a Twitter account and used his first tweet to apologize. Hey @AZEALIABANKS - I'm the guy on Jeopardy who mixed you up with Iggy Azalea. I apologize. I actually think you're awesome. — Nicholas Berube (@nicholas_berube) January 21, 2015

Simply Woww...
Some people are meant to have children. And then there's JWoww - aka, Jenni Farley, Snooki's Jersey Shore pal. Last week, she and her husband thought it would be cute to figure out which of them their daughter Meilani more closely resembled. So the hubby gave Meilani a mohawk, a muscle shirt and a beard that seems to be spaghetti sauce smeared all over her face, and took her picture. JWoww decided to give Meilani hair extensions and a pair of sunglasses. Oh, and a set of boobs. Picture taken. Then both were posted on JWoww's blog. Twenty years from now, when Meilani writes her tell-all book, this will be chapter 1, without a doubt! Meanwhile, you can be sure JWoww and her hubby are in the running for Parents of the Year!

Isn't News Supposed to be New?
By now you of course know that Kim Kardashian is releasing a book of selfies called "Selfish." 352 pages of selfies of Kim Kardashian. Aimed, naturally, at people who don't have Instagram. Or Twitter. Or Facebook. Or the internet. Anyway, Kim the Kween of Social Media shared the cover of her book with the world last week. Surprise. It's a picture of Kim, her hair wet, showing a lot of cleavage. I know. Never saw it coming...     So proud to share the cover of my book Selfish, out in May! Thank you Rizzoli for making this happen & being the best partner. A big thank you to the Donda team & Kanye for inspiring this idea & helping to design this book so I can share a decade of selfies in such an intimate & artistic way! If You See Them Before the Game, Are They Still Super Bowl Commercials?
Remember the good old days when you actually had to watch the Super Bowl to see the Super Bowl commercials? Time was, if you missed the Super Bowl, you might get a recap a day or two later, and then you'd have to wait to randomly catch the ads at some point after that. No more. Thanks to social media and the internet, we can see the ads that will cost big bucks for their appearance in the Big Game days, weeks, months in advance. Last week, the folks at Budweiser released their 90-second #upforwhatever human Pac Man ad during NBC's Tonight Show. I guess we'll just have to watch the Super Bowl for the football now...

The Jersey Reverend
You never know what next to expect from The Jersey Shore's Snooki - aka Nicole Polizzi. I won't even make you guess. This time, she's an ordained minister. She announced it the way all things are officially announced these days - on Twitter. She made her ministry official so she could perform the marriage of her hair stylists in Connecticut in June. Since making the announcement, she's gotten a deluge of requests to officiate at marriages. She could turn this into a nice little side business. How long do you think before this becomes a reality TV show? I'm OFFICIALLY Ordained!!! Just call me Mama Reverend. The Latest from Disney: The Measles
Authorities have traced a new outbreak of the measles on the West Coast to the happiest place on Earth - Disneyland. The thought is that "an infected foreigner" - that's how Time magazine reports it, anyway - carried the disease into the park sometime just before Christmas. Through contact with unvaccinated individuals, the measles has spread. Again, that's a theory, this time from someone at the California department of health, as reported by Reuters news agency. They're counting 70 cases so far that can be traced back, they believe, to Disneyland. That's a lot of measles, especially when you consider it was thought to have been eradicated in the United States as of 2000.

Saving Meg's Booty
Meghan Trainor may be all about that bass, but until Mr. Right comes along, no one's getting to see what her bass is all about. "That’s the trick, it’s all about the mystery," she told London's Mail Online recently. "I save that for my boy. Well, for whoever gets to date me one day." It's refreshing, in a way, that in this day and age when most of her peers seem to be in competition to wear as little as possible, that this pop star has some comparatively old-fashioned ideas. You can read the quick article here. It really is a breath of fresh air...

Bill Belichick Tackles Science
On Saturday, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick held a press conference to address the issue of deflated game balls in last week's AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. The only thing missing was a white lab coat and a blackboard, and he could have been mistaken for anyone's high school science teacher. This theory, based on his own observations and test, is that the delation was related to atmospheric conditions. Period. So the folks at Fox Sports turned to another science expert to take a shot at the coach's explanation. Bill Nye the science guy isn't buying a word of it. He says there's one thing and one thing only that affects the pressure of a football. Don't let me spoil it for you - watch the report...

Idina Menzel - better known to John Travolta as Adele Dazeem - will be taking a week off from her Broadway play, "If/Then." And the play will shut down while she's gone. Why? So she can prepare for her appearance at the Super Bowl to sing the National Anthem. She's probably not taking any chances, especially after she caught all sorts of flack for not being able to hit a high note during a live performance on New Year's Eve while singing her hit song from Frozen, "Let It Go." East Versus West in Commercials Too
Another Super Bowl ad "leaked" onto the internet yesterday, this one for Carl's Jr, a fast food chain located mostly in the western part of the United States. So, the ad will be aired only in the western region of the US. It's a bit racy, with a model walking through a farmer's market, talking about how she likes to go au naturel. It's to promote Carl's new All-Natural Burger, and it's fairly clever in a photographic sense. But according to an article in USA Today, one marketing expert doesn't think it will do its job - selling hamburgers - especiall to a Super Bowl audience. "'It's like porn meets American Pastime,' says branding consultant Erika Napoletano. 'It makes NFL cheerleaders -- underpaid and underclothed -- look like nuns in comparison.'" You decide. If you live in the West, you can wait til next Sunday. If you live in the East, take a look now.

Maybe the NFL Should Check Its Instagrams
This may be one of the most untimely yet timely Instagram posts ever. On the day after the NFC and AFC Championships were decided, the National Football League posted a behind-the-scenes picture of some Super Bowl footballs in the process of assembly. Every one completely deflated. This as they investigated Deflategate - where it's now been determined that 11 of 12 balls used by the New England Patriots in their victory over the Indianapolis Colts were under-inflated. So the natural tagline to this picture is #noballsforseahawks?.     Behind the scenes: Making the Super Bowl XLIX footballs! #SB49 📷: Rick Osentoski/AP A photo posted by @nfl on Jan 20, 2015 at 4:46pm PST

Oh Say Can You SNAP!
One of the funnier moments in Tuesday's State of the Union Address is when President Obama was talking about his agenda for the next two years. "I have no more campaigns to run," he said as a prelude to the discussion. That was greeted with some snickers and some laughter and some applause. The president turned to those making the noise, smirked, and said, "I know, cuz I won both of them." Okay, the State of the Union is meant to be a serious thing, but if a man's getting heckled, a man's got to do what a man's got to do. And Barack Obama did it perfectly. I can't wait to see him as one of the presenters at the Justin Bieber roast...

Red Velvet Oreos Are On the Way!
The snack-eating world is going a little ga-ga over a new addition to Nabisco's line of Oreos. Ladies and gentlemen, the Red Velvet Oreo will be available, on a limited basis, mind you, starting in February. Nabisco says it took about 18 months to get it right, but now it's ready to roll out. The folks at ABC News had some of their editors conduct a taste test, and the overwhelming opinion is that while the cookie is reminiscent of red velvet, it's still about as chocolatey as a regular Oreo. What's different is the cream cheese inspired filling - not exactly cream cheese, but creamier than the regular Oreo filling. Not an overwhelming endorsement, but you can bet they'll sell out anyway.
