Have Love & Mercy
There's a movie hitting the theaters on June 5 that's sort of flying under the radar, dwarfed by some of the blockbusters that will open the summer season. Love & Mercy is the story of Brian Wilson, one of the driving forces of the Beach Boys. They've got two actors playing the same guy - John Cusack and Paul Dano. Watch the trailer, and then watch the interview Variety magazine posted last fall with the actors in the movie. And make an appointment for early June - this one looks pretty good.

Drop & Give Them Twenty!
Jon Stewart posted a video of himself doing 20 pushups recently? Why? To raise awareness about America's veterans by dropping and giving them twenty, and posting it to social media and GiveThem20.org.   It doesn't cost you anything - just a few minutes of your time, and calling out two friends to do the same. Jon called out John Oliver and the New York Mets - which I'm pretty sure represents more than one person, but hey, he's Jon Stewart, and he can do what he likes. (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Jon accepts the #GiveThem20 challenge with 20 push-ups for veterans and calls out John Oliver and the New York Mets. โ–บ Visit givethem20.org and American Corporate Partners (ACP) to join him and thank returning veterans. That Would Make Church & Temple More Interesting
Sometimes, you just have to take a stab at it, right? You're on Jeopardy!, the Final Jeopardy category is Hymns, and the answer is a doozy: A Christian hymn and a Jewish holiday hymn are both titled this, also the name of a 2009 Tony-nominated musical   The correct question: What is "Rock of Ages?" Choyon Manjrekar had a very unusual - and incorrect - question that has since gone viral. Check it out...

The Best Graduation Video This Year
Imagine you're graduating from high school. You're on stage, waiting to hear your name. You're waiting, and waiting, and you're really up there all by yourself. You think they've forgotten your name. Jonny Quest Going Live?
In the 1960s, the folks at Hanna-Barbera produced an animated series called Jonny Quest about the adventures of a boy scientist. It featured Jonny and his dog Bandit, his friend Hadji, his dad and their all-around tough guy, Race Bannon. It only lasted a couple of seasons, but it spawned a few attempts at being remade. And now, Robert Rodriguez (of Sin City fame, among others) is teaming up with a screenwriter from Pirates of the Caribbean to come up with a live action movie. If this were 30 years ago, Johnny Depp would make the perfect Jonny Quest... That doesn't mean he won't be playing it now, of course.

Doctor Bon Jovi, I Presume?
"I sat down and wrote you a song." That's the gift Jon Bon Jovi gave to graduates at the Camden campus of Rutgers University. The university conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters, and as part of his subsequent commencement address, he picked up his guitar. The song, called "Reunion," urged graduates "to go start your own revolution, and I'll see you at the reunion." It was the first time it was ever performed in front of an audience. I can see it getting played a lot more, can't you?

Rest in Peace, Anne Meara
Actress and comedian Anne Meara passed away over the weekend at the age of 85. She and her husband, Jerry Stiller, were a pretty successful comedy team in the 60s, 70s and 80s. She appeared on a number of TV shows, including Sex and the City, All My Children and King of Queens. She's also the mother of Ben Stiller. Check out one of Stiller & Meara's appearances on The Carol Burnett Show...

John Legend Disses Jamie Foxx, Sorta
Last week on The Tonight Show, Jamie Foxx and Jimmy Fallon played Wheel of Musical Impressions. One of the voice/song combos Jamie dialed up was John Legend singing the Toys R Us jingle. It starts at 2:45 on the video below.(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Wheel of Musical Impressions with Jamie Foxx Jimmy challenges Jamie Foxx to a game of random musical impressions, such as John Legend singing the Toys "R" Us jingle. Posted by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 John Legend caught wind of it, and posted this response. Pretty cool, don't you think? We'll post this one in John's column.

Carpool Karoake with Justin Bieber, and It's Not a Carwreck
When you've got a late night talk show these days, you've got to develop signature bits. Cuz it's a tough market out there. James Corden's signature bit (so far, anyway) on The Late Late Show is Carpool Karaoke, where he picks up a guest and drives him or her to the show. Along the way, they have silly conversations, sing songs, stop passersby, eat fast food, and more. And they generate some laughs along the way. Check out his latest, with Justin Bieber.

Say It Ain't So, Mary-Kate and Ashley
Well, gang, it's official. The Olsen twins - Mary-Kate and Ashley - will not be joining the Full House sequel called Fuller House on Netflix. John Stamos, who will make guest appearances on the show as well as produce it, said he was heartbroken on Twitter, and then posted this. I understand they're in a different place and I wish them the best. I promise you will not be dissapointed with our reunion and spin off!! — John Stamos (@JohnStamos) May 23, 2015 They say it's so they can concentrate on their fashion line and other busines ventures. Personally, I think it's becaue they stopped looking like twins about 15 years ago. (By the way, John, you got "disappointed" wrong. But you are heartbroken, so I guess it's understandable.)

Game of Thrones: The Musical
On Thursday's Red Nose Day USA special on NBC, Chris Martin and Cold Play put together a 12-minute documentary video about their efforts to get their newest work, "Game of Thrones: The Musical," onto a Broadway stage. Okay, it's a spoof, but so well done. Plus, they had the help of a quite a few cast members from Game of Thrones, including Mark Addy (Robert Barateheon), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow). The narration by Liam Neeson really helps sell it. And Jon Snow singing "Wildling" to Ygritte (Rose Leslie) could well be the best part of it. Check it out.

The Old "Hidden Ball" Trick
It's the bottom of the ninth. You're down by one run. You've got two outs, and a pinch runner at second. The pitcher whirls around and tries to pick off the runner. The throw goes wild into the outfield. Your runner takes off for third. But wait. The pitcher is chasing your runner down. The pitcher had the ball in his glove the whole time. Tag. Your runner is out. Game over. Pretty exciting end for one team - pretty devastating for the other. What makes it even more interesting: it happened at a high school playoff game in Colorado. Check out the video...

Prehistoric Funk
I just stumbled on this video from a few months ago, but it's perfect for some holiday fun. One of the hottest songs of the year so far has been Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk." Turns out the beat and music are very similar to "Walk The Dinosaur," a song by a group called Was (Was Not) in 1987. Pretty amazing how close these two are. I wonder if Robin Thicke had anything to do with "Uptown Funk?"

"Nobody Sees It, Didn't Happen"
Trailer # 2 has been released for Black Mass, the story of Boston's most notorious wanted man, Whitey Bulger, starring Johnny Depp. Johnny's unrecognizable in this one - as he is in most of his films. But funny thing, he does call to mind two other actors. First, Jack Nicholson's character in The Departed. Second, and only in one of the shots in the sunglasses, James Spader's character in The Blacklist. What do you think? Dick's Still Got It
Dick Van Dyke's a song-and-dance man at heart. Sure, he's an actor and comic too, but deep down inside, he's a song-and-dance man. So it's not surprising to see him moving quite well - especially given that he's 89 years old - in this video for Dustbowl Revival's song, "Never Had to Go." He's still got his comic chops too.

Thank You for Your Service
It's Memorial Day, a time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country. We should all the take the time to stop and say thank you to those who've gone before us. And let's not forget to say thanks to those that are still here. This amazing video is from a year ago, but it remains poignant. Runners in San Jose, California were participating in a charity race benefitting the military. A 95-year-old veteran named Joe Bell set up a chair in front of his home, and sat in his old uniform tunic and cap to watch the racers pass. And before long, the race was all about Joe, as the runners came up to him and shook his hand to thank him for his service. Touching. (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); The sight of a 95-year-old veteran cheering on runners in a military charity race in San Jose triggered a spontaneous show of patriotism that captured the nation's attention.Joe Bell was waving at the runners when suddenly he became the one being honored. One by one, participants ran over to Bell, shaking his hand and thanking him for his service. The race benefited the Pat Tillman Foundation, set up in honor of the fallen Army Ranger and San Jose native.Watch KTLA's video here: http://ktlane.ws/1kwcgo9 Posted by KTLA 5 News on Tuesday, March 4, 2014

Dave Grohl - The 5th Beatle
Music fans in London got a treat on Saturday night. Paul McCartney was in concert. Like that's not enough. But, he invited Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters on stage with him to assist with a Beatles classic, "I Saw Her Standing There." Couple of observations... (1) Paul's voice is holding out pretty well for a guy about to turn 74. (2) Dave and Paul together is a very cool collaboration. And I would love to see more of them!

"Can You Smell What the Rock is Officiating?"
So, Nick Mundy from Screen Junkies is a huge fan of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Over the years, they've developed an actual friendship. Enough so that the rest of the crew at Screen Junkies was able to get The Rock to help out when they wanted to pull a prank on Nick. Well, not really a prank. It was a surprise wedding. Not only did The Rock agree, he decided he wanted to be the wedding officiant, so he went and got ordained and registered with the state of California. Check out the footage - it's actually pretty cool.

Flaky Growths (Lichens) on Trees and Shrubs
Melinda's Blog is brought to you by American Transmission Company. Don't panic when you find flaky gray, green, white or yellow substances, known as lichens, on the trunk or branches of your trees and shrubs. These growths do not damage the plant, but may indicate your tree and shrub needs a bit of TLC. Lichens are composed of a fungus and green or blue-green algae. The algae provides the photosynthesis to produce food, while the fungus supplies water and minerals and protects the algae. This mutually beneficial relationship allows them to withstand harsh environmental conditions. Although the lichens usually do not harm the plant they reside upon, they are most common in declining trees and shrubs where branches have died, allowing the sunlight to reach the lichens. Reduce the problem by providing plants with proper care. Expand the mulch beds around trees and shrubs. Remove dead and damaged branches and water plants thoroughly when needed. A bit more information: Further increase the health of your trees and shrubs by expanding the mulch beds. This will make maintenance easier for you and improve the growing conditions for the plants. Use organic mulches like woodchips and shredded bark that conserve moisture, suppress weeds, reduce competition from grass and improve the soil as they decompose. Managing and Enjoying Reseeding Perennials
Melinda's Blog is brought to you by American Transmission Company. More is often considered better, except when it comes to unwanted seedlings. Self seeding perennials mean lots of free plants to move to other gardens in the landscape, but sometimes it just means more unwanted plants to control. Purple coneflower and Black-eyed Susan are two popular perennials that can quickly fill your garden with their offspring. You can reduce the problem by removing faded flowers and thus eliminating the seeds. The downside, the birds will miss eating the seeds and you'll miss the winter beauty and bird activity the seeds provide. I choose to leave the seedheads intact, enjoy the birds and share the seedlings with friends, community organizations or my compost pile. Garden phlox is another prolific seeder. Deadheading – removing the faded flowers - reduces reseeding, but also encourages additional bloom. A bit more information: Plume poppy, Northern sea oats, columbine and blackberry lily are other perennials that tend to self seed. Share your extra seedlings with friends. Keep a few old pots or plastic bags and a trowel on hand. When your gardening friends come to visit, hand them a trowel and container and let them dig a few of their favorites. You'll have fewer seedlings and they'll have more plants for their garden. For more gardening tips, how-to videos, podcasts and more, visit www.melindamyers.com

Who's Got the Dramamine?
The folks at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California have a new roller coaster that could be perfect for you - if you're a daredevil. It's called Twisted Colossus, and as advertised, it does things that other coasters don't. Or can't. Or both. It's a hybrid steel-and-wood double-track coaster, and the folks at Theme Park Review call it "insane." That's the ride itself, not the riders - although that may also be accurate. Check out this amazingly scary video. And let me know - would you ride in the front seat? Would you ride it at all? (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Twisted Colossus REAL POV! Letterman's Very Last Top 10 List
When you think of David Letterman, one of the first three things to come to mind has to be his nightly Top 10 lists. And what better topic for his last Top 10 than the Top 10 Things I've Always Wanted to Say to David Letterman. And who better to pronounce these than good friends to Dave and his program, like Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Peyton Manning, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chris Rock, Jim Carrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Martin, Barbara Walters and Alec Baldwin. What a way to wrap up this tradition.

What the Other Late Night Talk Hosts Did
Did you wonder what the other late night talk hosts did to mark David Letterman's retirement? Earlier this week, we posted Jimmy Kimmel's tribute. That was very special. On the night of Dave's last show, Conan O'Brien did his regular show for 35 minutes, and when the clock hit 11:35PM, he and his guest, Patton Oswalt, urged people to go and watch Dave's show. Pretty cool - and watch what they did afterwards!   James Corden, the new host of The Late Late Show that until Wednesday followed Dave, sang a special tribute song to Dave with the help of a heavily-bearded Sting. Also pretty cool...

JWoww Delivers a Smackdown
Jenni Farley - aka JWoww from Jersey Shore - took to Instagram to talk about pictures of herself in a bikini. Someone snapped and published a bunch of pictures of her at a pool in a bathing suit. She was with her daughter and her fiance. People being what they are - sometimes pretty stupid and rude - they made comments about JWoww's body, calling her flabby and referring to her "cellulite-ridden caboose." Others would have curled up in a corner and cried a while But this is JWoww, after all, one of the toughest young ladies on the Eastern seaboard. Check out what she has to say... And tell me if you feel like standing up and cheering...     I want to sit here and say that I'm embarrassed by these pictures but honestly I'm not. I'm a new mom that loves to work out but also loves food as well. I was at my girlfriend @joeidfox wedding at an all-inclusive resort and decided to indulge and have the best time of my life with my daughter at a pool. I also decided to pick a wedgy (which is a pretty amazing photo in itself). But at the end of the day I am not perfect and neither is my body... And to make it worse someone decided to sell even more awkward photos of me on vacation with my family So tabloids can get a nice laugh and write mean things... I will always try to eat healthy and take @310nutrition supplements and consistently work out But I'm also a human and I love being me and I love my life I will never try to follow the trend of being stick thin I follow the trend of what I love in life... And what I love is me Everyone love yourself and consider yourself #flawless โœŒ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’— A photo posted by Jenni JWOWW (@jwoww) on May 19, 2015 at 3:45pm PDT

The Rock Melts
This happened earlier in the week, but it's pretty uplifting and worthy of sharing. Dwayne Johnson - aka The Rock - posted a picture to Instagram. It shows him reading a letter, grinning like a child at Christmas. Turns out the letter is from Steven Spielberg - yes, that Steven Spielberg - who wrote to say that he is a fan of Dwayne's work. Dwayne was moved, because growing up, he'd been a huge fan of Steven's. Look at the picture. And read what he said. So cool!   Grinnin' now like a big ass kid... When I was 8yrs old I sat front row to see a sold out INDIANA JONES in its opening weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina. I walked out of that theater excited and wanted to be "Indy".. cool, funny, charming with the ladies and kickin' ass w/ a smile. But at 8yrs old I was also perfectly content playing w/ my Star Wars figures and sneaking off listening to Richard Pryor concerts. Throughout the years I've credited this man and his movies as being my greatest inspiration in becoming an actor and wanting to always make "his kind" of movies - entertaining, quality and above all else.. heart. Just receiving this personal letter from him and its not only made me incredibly humbled and grateful, but it's also brought me back to being that 8yr old boy again who not only loves movies, but I now get to make the movies I love and enjoy the impact they have on others. THANK YOU STEVEN SPIELBERG for these inspiring and motivating words in your letter and cheers to making sure I'm always listening to that little voice in my gut. #CoolestGiftEver #BigAss8yrOldKid #SpielbergInspired A photo posted by therock (@therock) on May 15, 2015 at 9:34pm PDT
