Growing Freesias Indoors

Add a bit of color and fragrance to the holidays with Freesias. The spikes of flowers come in a variety of colors from white to purple, yellow to red and even blue.

Check with your local garden center, favorite catalogue or order the corms on-line. Plant them in a well-drained potting mix with little or no perlite to avoid fluoride damage.

Set the corms pointed side up about one inch deep and 2 to 3 inches apart. Water thoroughly.

Precool the planted corms for 45 days at 55 degrees to encourage more compact growth. Move to a sunny location as soon as growth appears.

Grow in a cool, about 65 degrees, bright location. Keep the soil moist and fertilize with a dilute solution of flowering houseplant fertilizer.

Stake tall strappy leaves to prevent them from falling and keep your plant looking its best.

A bit more information:  Purchase ring stakes or make your own with bamboo stakes or twigs and twine to keep floppy leaves in check. Or set the plant in a tall container whose sides help support the leaves and flower stems.

That Knot is Tied
Country star Jason Aldean tied the knot last Saturday with Brittany Kerr. Yesterday, Brittany made it official by posting a picture of herself wearing a "Wifey" shirt to Instagram.     ❤️ A photo posted by @brittanylkerr on Mar 25, 2015 at 12:45pm PDT The wedding was held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. And in the You-Can't-Make-This-Stuff-Up Department, the nuptials were officiated by Willie Robertson. Yes, that Willie Robertson - the one from Duck Dynasty.

Nice to Meet You - You Are Dismissed
I guess everyone has a breaking point. It's got to be rough when you're on a publicity junket halfway around the world and reporters start asking silly questions. Take for instance Cate Blanchett. She was in Australia on a show called The Project to promote her new film, Cinderella. The report kept asking off-topic questions, and Cate had to keep steering him back to the purpose of her visit. And then he asked how she got a cat in the movie to do what she wanted it to do. And that's when she snapped. Check it out.

Defect & Head for the Border
Taco Bell launched a new ad campaign yesterday to promote its breakfast menu. And it's taking aim right between the eyes of a certain clown who routinely provides the "same same same" breakfast. The long-form ad looks as gray as anything George Orwell ever envisioned, and it has a feel like the Divergent films. Check it out. Unless you're afraid of clowns. Then you might want to think twice...

And Now, It's Two Direction
You can thank One Direction for the high-pitched wailing coming from your local high school yesterday afternoon. That's when they made it official: Zayn Malik is leaving the group, and it's permanent. A week ago, Zayn stopped touring, saying he was stressed. Now, he wants to be a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight." I'm sure that will happen... Meanwhile, One Direction will continue to tour and record without Zayn. Which is a pretty normal reaction for a bunch of 22-year-olds, don't you think?

A for Effort, But We'll Call This a Fail
You've got to give this guy credit. A motorist traveling on Interstate 5 outside Tacoma, Washington was using the car-pool lane. To legally do that, you have to actually have at least one passenger. This guy did - except it wasn't a real passenger. It was a cardboard cutout of the Most Interesting Man in the World. You know, the white-bearded guy from the Dos Equis ads? A state trooper noticed, and pulled the guy over. The punishment: $124 fine. The reward: this very cool tweet from the Washington State Patrol. I don't always violate the HOV lane law...but when I do, I get a $124 ticket! We'll give him an A for creativity! 👮👍 pic.twitter.com/hNbQDuBWfc — Trooper Guy Gill (@wspd1pio) March 24, 2015

How Do You Get a Late Night Talk Show, Anyway?
James Corden debuted his new late night talk show Monday on CBS. He's the guy who took over Craig Ferguson's spot on The Late Late Show. You might know him as the Baker from the recent theatrical release, Into The Woods. And now he's hosting a late night talk show. How does that happen? Here's how. A rare behind-the-scenes look at how a new kid on the block gets a network TV slot.

Crying Piccolo Girl Goes Viral
Roxanne Chalifoux got national attention over the weekend at the Villanova/ North Carolina State game in the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament. A piccolo player in the Villanova band, she was caught on TV, playing through her pain at the end of the game, which Villanova lost by 3 points. All of a sudden, she was a star. So it's only natural that Jimmy Fallon would have her on The Tonight Show, and even better, she sat in with the show's house band, The Roots. Check it out...

Patti LaBelle Dishes Up Some Salsa
Dancing with the Stars is back, and once again, its mix of stars is eclectic. Take, for instance, 70-year-old Patti LaBelle. The singer's spent 50 years in the music industry, and now she's on TV, strutting her stuff with her partner, Artem Chigvintsev. You'd expect to see her dance to something a little slower, maybe one of her own songs. No, she chose 50 Cent's "In Da Club," salsa-style. And this after injuring her knee while rehearsing a day earlier. Nicely done, Patti, nicely done...

Mulder & Scully, I Presume?
The folks at Fox delighted a whole lot of people yesterday, with confirmation that The X-Files will be returning. The show about a couple of FBI agents investigating the paranormal went off the air 13 years ago, and fans have been clamoring for a rebirth ever since. Now it's official. A six-episode "event" is on the way, starring David Duchovny as Agent Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Agent Dana Scully. The show's creator, Chris Carter thinks of the time off as "a 13-year commercial break,” according to the Fox.com website. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.” Production begins this summer...

Superhero Soccer, Anyone?
Ever wonder what would happen if you put Superman and Spiderman and Iron Man and some X-Men on the same soccer field? Not to worry - it's been done. Uptown Funk, Hogwarts Style
"Uptown Funk" is fast becoming the year's most parodized song. Next up, a parody that would make JK Rowling proud. Well, maybe. Say hello to "Dark Lord Funk," performed by none other than Lord Valdemort. Pretty nicely done, even managing to loop the Harry Potter theme into the mix in spots...

Pretty Woman + 25
It's the movie that made Julia Roberts a household name. It's hard to believe that Pretty Woman was released in 1980, but there you have it. And to hear the story told, it almost didn't happen. Matt Lauer interviewed four of the cast members - Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Hector Elizondo and Laura San Giacomo - plus director Garry Marshall on yesterday's Today Show. Julia and Richard did most of the talking, and it's fun to see that their chemistry still works.   Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Worst Movie Promo Ever
Have you been caught up in the Sharknado frenzy? For some reason, the first two Sharknado TV movies broke all sorts of viewership records. So naturally, Sharknado 3 is coming to our small screens this July. This time, David Hasselhoff - a guy used to spending some time on the beach in a Speedo, not that beaches make a difference in these movies - will be a featured player. And he took some time recently to talk to the folks at HuffPost.com about the experience. He says it's "the worst movie you have ever seen." It's hard to tell if he's the advance man for a brilliant marketing effort, or the worst promo guy ever. I'm leaning toward the latter. How about you?

TaylorSwift.porn?
That's right. You read it correctly. Taylor Swift now owns a pornography site. No, not for that reason. On June 1, ICANN - the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - will be expanding the number of Top Level Domain names - which currently include the old familiars like .com and .net - to also include .porn, .sucks, .adult and more. But before June 1, brands have the opportunity to tie up those internet suffixes that might be associated with the brand name. Enter Taylor Swift - among others. She bought up TaylorSwift.porn and TaylorSwift.adult. Think of it as a preemptive strike against people who would likely do some nasty stuff with those addresses...

The Pizza for the Pope on the Run
When the Pope visited Naples over the weekend, he got a nice little surprise. As his Popemobile traveled along a coastal road lined with spectators, an enterprising pizzaman ran up to the car and delivered Francis a nice pie. One for the road, you could say. The yellow cherry tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella pizza came from Pizzeria Don Ernesto. Yellow and white are the colors of the Vatican, so the toppings makes sense. The best part of the video is watching the security guys on the back of the Popemobile do nothing...

Tom Cruise Goes #RogueNation

This one is called Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation, and an official trailer was released yesterday. Ving Rhames is back, and the rest of the IMF crew is new. As usual, it's hard to tell who's the good guy and who's the bad guy - but that's half the fun.

Good Marketing? That Depends...
You've got to check out this Facebook ad campaign. The folks at Depends want you to "Drop Your Pants for Underwareness." Yeah, that's what they want you to do. Mom & Pole & Baby Make 3
Ashley Wright is an attaching parent. I guess that means she attaches her child to herself as she goes about her daily business. She even blogs about it, using the pen name Ms. Wright. Earlier this month, she posted a video, showing herself pole-dancing with her two-year-old daughter strapped securely to her back. We're not talking about stripper pole dancing, but the kind that a lot of women are using for core training. And not the kind of thing you should be doing, I'm thinking, with a baby strapped to your back. Check out the video, see what you think...

Keep Your Poop to Yourself
Marty Walsh, the new mayor of Boston, Massachusetts has a pet peeve. Well, he's peeved over pets. Specifically, people who don't pick up after their pets properly on the streets of Boston. “They’re picking their dog stuff up, and then if the barrel is full they’re leaving it next to it,” the mayor told The Boston Herald last week. “Take it home, put it in the trash in your house ... put the trash in your trash barrel in your kitchen, don’t drop it on the street.” The mayor says he's open to all sorts of ideas on how to get people to take better care of the city's sidewalks, and it could mean significant fines. Marty has a simple plea. “God almighty, clean up after your dogs.” Within a month, that's a T-shirt, guaranteed....

Putting the Madness in March Madness
It's the time of year when everyone and his brother picks a bracket for the NCAA tournament. Sixty-four teams enter, only one will be champion. It's been a source of gambling for many years, both th serious stuff, plus friendly wagering. President Obama's a big basketball fan, so he once again completed and made public his bracket. And Charlie Sheen - the mouthpiece of the people - doesn't like that one bit. No he doesn't. Check out this video from TMZ.com, where Charle tells the TMZer that the pracitce "just makes me insane. It’s not cool. It’s not fair to the families and to who we are as a republic.” Yeah, Charlie Sheen said that...  Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames. Shut Up and Dance!
There's a very cool video making its way around the Internet. It's a mash-up of a bunch of movie dances - from Dirty Dancing to Grease and everything in between - set to the tune of "Shut Up and Dance." It's put together very nicely, and almost seems like the dancers were dancing to this particular song. Play a litle game with yourself, and see how many movies you can identify from the compilation...

Guess What, New England?
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced this week that our planet just experienced the warmest winter on record. Well, the Northern Hemisphere did. Temperatures for December through February were 0.05 degrees warmer than the previous record-holder (2007) in the 135 years of keeping track. That will come as quite a surprise to the folks who live in New England. Not to worry - the data does show that New England and eastern Canada had colder-than-average temperatures. It's good the data's there - otherwise, the folks who live there might not have known. By the way, today's the first day of spring, and parts of New England are looking at several inches of snow. Yup, things are warming up all right...
