Flowers Fail to Bloom

Summer heat and drought can be hard on our plants and impact our gardens beauty and productivity.  We can’t change the weather but we can help our plants through these stressful times.

Stressed plants often fail to flower.  Extreme heat or cold prevents tomatoes from setting fruit and causes peppers to drop their blossoms.  The same goes for many of our ornamental plants.  Some flowers like sweet alyssum and lobelia tend to stop flowering during hot weather.  Grow more heat tolerant varieties like Snow Princess and the variegated Frosty Knight alyssum as well as Laguna and Techno lobelia.
And when the heat sets in, reduce the stress on your plants. Mulch the soil to keep roots cool and moist during hot weather.  Water thoroughly but less frequently to encourage deep roots that are more heat and drought tolerant.  And don’t apply high nitrogen quick release fertilizers than can damage stressed plants.
A bit more information:  Proper soil preparation and fertilization will improve the overall health and vigor of your plants making them more heat and drought tolerant.  Use a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer like Milorganite (miklorganite.com) at the start of the season. If the season turns hot and dry, it will not damage your plants.  Consider using a plant strengthener like JAZ Spray (jazsprays.com)to increase your plants natural defenses making them more resistant to heat and drought stress as well as insect and disease infestations.

The End is Near
The official trailer for Mockingjay 2, the final episode in the Hunger Games saga, has been released. The movie comes out just before Thanksgiving. If you saw Mockingjay 1, maybe you were as disappointed as me. Just when it got to the part where it was getting really interesting, it stopped. The only thing missing was the "... to be continued" graphic over the final scene. Which may have been there, I don't really remember any more.     (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Mockingjay Part 2 Official Trailer – “Welcome To The 76th Hunger Games” Nothing can prepare you for the end. Leno Moves in on The Tonight Show Again!
The other night on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon pulled a hamstring during the opening monologue. It was so bad, he couldn't continue. Luckily, former Tonight Show host Jay Leno was waiting in the wings, and stepped in to take over. He looked right at home, and his jokes were pretty darn good.

"No Matter Where I Go, Dad Will Always Be With Me"
Bindi Irwin is really lighting things up on Dancing with the Stars. This week, she dedicated her routine to her late dad, Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. And it's an amazing dance. Very touching, very moving.  And right now, she's the odds-on favorite to win the entire season...

If You're Reading This, He Was Wrong... Again
A preacher in Pennsylvania predicted in July that yesterday, October 7, 2015, would be the end of the world. Pretty definitive and bold statement. Especially when you consider he used the world "annihilate." If you're just reading about this for the first time, oops. Looks like the preacher had it wrong. Again. A few years ago, he predicted the end of the Earth on May 21, 2011. That didn't happen either. Ask anyone. Even the video he posted back in July doesn't believe what he believes. At the end, it's telling people to like his Facebook page - and nowhere does it say "temporarily."

Glass Walkway 3500 Feet Up Shatters - But It's Okay!
Not even a month ago, a glass-bottomed walkway opened to the public at Yuntai Mountain Geological Park in Henan Province, China. It's 3540 feet up, and wraps around an outcropping of rock in a U shape. On Monday, a tourist dropped a stainless-steel coffee mug on the walkway, and the glass shattered, "causing the tourists on it to understandably freak out," according to one source. You think? There are three panels of glass, and only one cracked, so the engineers claim no one was in danger. Uh huh. Know what? Just watching the video makes me squeamish. Being on it and hearing it crack - safe or not - I'm getting off and never getting back on...

Keep Your Eye on the... Wait... What?
This video is going viral. The Milford Mighty Mites (that's Milford, Masachusetts) are a Pee Wee Football team. Over the weekend, they took the field at halftime during a varsity football game for a scrimmage. Good chance for the little guys to be seen on a bigger stage, right? But the field's PA system kept playing music while the kids played, and some of there were overtaken by it when "Whip Nae Nae" started playing. It's hilarious. Half of the kids look like they're in a dance-off, while the other half are there for some football. I think dance football has some potential...

"This Time, It's Really, Really Personal"
In Back to the Future II, Marty McFly traveled to the future. And while he was there, he passed a cinema that was advertising Jaws 19. Funny idea, and an homage to Steven Spielberg, I guess. Now that Back to the Future II is marking its 30th anniversary - which hardly seems possible - someone put together a promo for Jaws 19. And it's hilarious. Check it out... CNN and Anderson Cooper have a special running about the impact of social media on today's teenagers called #BeingThirteen. As part of the build-up around the show, celebrities were asked to post picture of themselves at the age of 13, and to describe how it felt. And some of the pictures... Well, check out a few for yourself. Or visit Twitter and use #Being13 to see the whole collection. Former Miss USA, Olivia Culpo:     Oh my gosh. So here it is #Being13-- chubby cheeks, brow game STRONG, awkward smile, are my eyes open?whats with the headband string??? -- ah #being13. Not really sure who you are or what the world is all about. I really feel for the younger generation and the tremendous amount of pressure young girls feel today to appear "perfect," basically holding an unrealistic expectation of face, body, social life etc. Everyone, no matter who you are, will never measure up to "perfect" because it doesn't exist. And however close you come to this "perfect" mold should not define how you feel about yourself or what you think others perceive you as. Photoshop, Instagram "highlight reels," and that 1/1000 perfect selfie have altered reality and created an unreachable standard. I think at the end of the day, no matter who you are, everyone struggles with insecurities and we're all in this together as women battling a time that is very much influenced by social media and these socially glorified images that set a standard of perfection. I'm not saying it's bad to post a picture that you think you look good in or take a selfie. I just wish young girls didn't feel sick over comparison and inevitably failing to measure up. So if you're 13 years old and awkward, be 13 and awkward! Same with 14 and 15 and every age. As cliche as it sounds- love the skin you're in. And love one another because we're all going through the same thing. How's This For a Guard Dog?
Check out this terrific surveillance video from a house in Monrovia, California. A 20-pound French bulldog managed to chase two decent-sized bears off his owner's property. And This Guy Wants to Be President?
Sitting down for an interview recently with SHOWstudio - I have no idea what that is - Kanye West had a lot to say about Keeping Up With the Kardashians. He referred to the reality TV show as "an art form." And he believes the show should be winning all sorts of awards. "... my wife and my family should’ve had plenty of Emmys by now.” Here's a little award-winning art for you to savor while you munch on Kanye's thoughts.

"Did Anybody Catch That Play?"
Every once in a while, a commercial comes along that captures a moment in time. This new State Farm commercial - showing some football referees who didn't see a play but have to make a call anyway - hits home, especially given the controversy over the non-call that happened in Monday night's game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Detroit Lions. To set it up: The Lions were running the ball in for a touchdown that would have put them ahead of the Seahawks. The ball carrier had the ball stripped just shy of the end zone. It bounced into the end zone, and Seahawks player batted it out of the field of play. That's a penalty, and it should have given the Lions the ball back at the one-yard line. Just about every one agrees, from the NFL vice-president in charge of officiating to the Seahawks' coach, Pete Carroll. So the Lions had one snatched away from them by some referees. Now watch the commercial, which you can bet aired during Monday night's game.

"Are You Crazy? We Don't Have to Work Anymore!"
A woman in Michigan became a millionaire many, many times over this week, after hitting the $310 million Powerball jackpot. Julie Leach was working an overnight shift at a fiberglass factory when she found out. She says she quit her "nasty, dirty job" automatically. She plans to use the money to pay off her current debts, travel, and then buy up land and build houses for her kids and grandchildren. It's so refreshing to find someone honest about quitting her job. Don't you just loathe those lottery winners who say, "Oh, I'll keep my job."

Light Xenophobia with Just a Dash of Diplomacy
It's been about a week since Trevor Noah plopped into the chair vacated not so long ago by Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. While the comparisons are flying, I've got to say, Trevor's holding his own. Check out the piece he did on Donald Trump last week. Some pretty interesting comparisons between the Donald and the president of South Africa - Trevor's home country. He's almost as biting as Jon - and I think once people get used to him in that seat, they'll grow fond of him too. How about you? Have you caught him yet? (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Trevor questions whether or not Donald J. The Summer That Wasn't
The folks at Saturday Night Live were on fire this weekend. They had the Hillary Clinton bartender bit that was phenomenal. And the opening of the show - with host Miley Cyrus - was pretty good too. Not so much the monologue, which was okay, but the montage of people who achieved celebrity for often ungodly reasons over the summer of 2015, with Miley's version of "My Way" underneath. Be sure to watch for Kim Davis, Jared Fogle and Josh Duggar. Classic.

Helen Mirren Hangs 'Em Up
Helen Mirren, the accomplished stage and screen actress, just turned 70. And with that milestone, she announced she's done with on-screen nudity. Her quote about it is pretty funny: “I was doing nude scenes [from] the first moment I started doing movies… . It was the era… . It seemed to be nothing to get your knickers in a twist over. That’s the good thing about getting older. You don’t have to do that sort of thing any more… [Now] my pleasure pillows are purely for my husband.” Back in 2011, when Helen hosted Saturday Night Live, they even did a skit about what you'll no longer see.

What, No Faceplants?
If you're like me, you have troubling balancing when you're dancing in shoes. I can't imagine doing it on wheels. And not just any wheels. Five guys decided to dance to Justin Bieber's "What Do You Mean?" on Segways. You know, the personal moving devices? These are smaller and more compact than the ones you've probably seen. And there's no control arm to hang onto either. It's pretty amazing to watch. So watch it already.

Hillary Meets Hillary, Face-to-Face
If you missed Saturday Night Live this weekend, you missed a lot of funny things. This one's my favorite. Hillary Clinton - played by SNL cast member Kate McKinnon - came face-to-face with a bartender who looked an awful lot like Hillary Clinton. That's because the bartender was played by the real Hillary Clinton. It's a very funny bit, and Hillary shows she's got some comedy chops. Who knew? She took some shots at herself, and does a terrific impression of Donald Trump too. My favorite moment is a brief cameo by Bill Clinton - SNL's Darrell Hammond.   (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Hillary Clinton's new friend seems awfully familiar. Up Close & Personal with a Couple of Whales
A paddleboarder was paddling away on his board off the coast of Autralia, having a wonderful time. And then he came face-to-face with a pair of Southern Right whales, a couple of very rare animals. Nothing to worry about. The whales were completely calm, and seemed more curious than anything. The best part: a local videographer had launched his drone camera, hoping to catch some footage of the whales. As a bonus, he caught the close encounter too. Check out the video. Setting John Lennon's "Imagine" as the soundtrack doesn't hurt one bit.

Maybe They Should Sue Suh
Ndamukong Suh is a defensive tackle for the MIami Dolphins. He's pretty good at his job, but you could argue that he's a little over-agressive. Back when he played for the Detroit Lions, he was suspended for stomping on Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers' ankle. Yesterday, in a game against the New York Jets, Suh is seen chasing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick out of bounds, then kicking his head and knocking his helmet off. The Internet's buzzing about it. Accidental, or intentional? You be the judge. But I'm calling a foul on this one.

You Didn't Come to My Wedding... Here's Your Bill!
This could be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. A couple in Minnesota was scheduled to attend a wedding, but at the last minute, their babysitter was unable to take care of their kids, so they couldn't go to the wedding. Things happen, right? But a couple of weeks afterward, they got a bill in the mail for just under $80, the cost of the two meals that were ordered and not eaten, plus the service and tax charge. The bill came from the new bride and groom. I wonder if the RSVP fully-disclosed the No-Show Fee? We should check on that, don't you think?
