Add Homes for the Birds to your Landscape

Take a walk through your landscape and evaluate your plants for their year round beauty and habitat for the birds.  The second week in February is “National Homes for the Birds” week and a great time to look for ways to provide food, shelter and water for our feathered friends.

Include some evergreens for year round cover and nesting sites.  You can include some deciduous trees and shrubs as well.  Dogwood, hawthorns, roses, elderberry and holly are a few of the natives that provide seasonal interest for you and nesting sites for the birds

Add seed-bearing perennials to the landscape and let them stand for winter.  The seedheads are attractive against the winter sky and the birds they attract add motion and life to the winter landscape.  Many perennial wildflowers also provide nesting material.  Silky seed heads and other less noticeable downy plant parts are used for lining nests.

A bit more information: Add some birdbaths and feeders to increase the number and diversity of birds visiting your landscape.  Get the whole family involved with some homemade birdfeeders – click here for more information.

Impressive & Patriotic Too
Over the 4th of July weekend, the Boston Red Sox hosted the Houston Astros. But that's not important. What is important are the guests who dropped in during the singing of the national anthem. Check out the US Navy's Parachute Team The Leap Frogs gliding into Fenway Park. Pretty amazing video.     (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); All-new video. The Leap Frogs jumped into the Boston Red Sox-Houston Astros game at Fenway Park over Independence Day weekend. Drop everything and watch it. Now. #redsox Posted by U.S. Navy Parachute Team "The Leap Frogs" on Sunday, July 5, 2015

Miracle at Daytona
The Coke Zero Daytona 400 ended incredibly yesterday morning. Austin Dillon, driving the number 3 car, went airborne in the final lap of the race, crashing into the catch fence. Incredibly, no one was seriously hurt, and Austin walked away from it. Absolutely incredible. The video's a little scary to watch, but when you know everyone's okay, that makes it a little easier.

USA Women Grab FIFA Gold
It's official. The USA Women's Soccer team defeated Japan last night in Vancouver, and took home FIFA's World Cup. That makes them the first women's team to win a third World Cup. It was an amazing game. USA's Carli Lloyd scored three goals on her own in the first half - something that's never been done in a World Cup final match. The final was 5-2. Watch the folks at ESPN break it down. And go USA!

Dave Grohl's Back, on a Throne
A couple of weeks ago, Dave Grohl broke his leg falling off-stage during a concert in Sweden. He got patched up quick - not a permanent fix, but enough to get him back on stage - and he finished up the show. Then he took a little time off to recuperate. He's still on that road to recovery, but that didn't stop him from kicking off the Foo Fighters' North American tour on Saturday at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. He's still got his leg in a cast, but he performed anyway, sitting most of the time with his leg propped up. His seat was fashioned like the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, made of guitars instead of swords. Check out the show's open... The video's not great, but you can capture the spirit of the thing...

Winter is Coming... to Wimbledon
Kit Harington - aka the possibly departed Jon Snow on HBO's Game of Thrones - was spotted at Wimbledon over the weekend. And he's wearing his hair long, Jon Snow-style, making those who really don't want the character to be dead speculating that maybe Jon Snow's not as dead as he appeared to be in the final scene of the season finale. Could it be? Could Jon Snow we making a return to The Wall to kick some Night's Watch brethren butts? Or could it be that he just likes wearing his hair long? I'll guess we'll have to wait and see, right? While we suffer through all sorts of other signs and hints about his return or not...

Country is Your Genre
Aerosmith's Steven Tyler released his first country music video last week. The song is called "Love is Your Name." And while it does have a slight country feel to it, it's still more Steven Tyler than country. I don't think putting on a pair of boots, standing on the porch of a one-room house and singing in front of a campfire with a big white horse in the background or having an old-fashioned pick-up driving down a dusty road is enough to country this one up. Maybe I'm wrong. What do you think?

Game of Hot Dogs
Hold the presses! Close the grills! The King of Hot Dog Eating has been dethroned. It's official. Joey Chestnut, who's won Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest every 4th of July for the past eight years, was knocked off Saturday by Matt "The Megaload" Stonie, who managed to down 62 hot dogs - buns and all - in 10 minutes. The next closest competitor managed only 32 hot dogs and buns in that same timeframe. I'll bet these guys don't get invited to a lot of cookouts... Disney Shown Up by Mother Nature
The folks at Walt Disney World have been known to put on some spectular mid-air light shows. This weekend, it looks like Mother Nature decided to show Disney who's boss. Check out this amazing video of a bit of lightning illuminating Cinderella's castle. Let's see you do that, Walt! (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Usually, it's fireworks, but this July 4th weekend, there was quite the spectacular natural light show over Cinderella's Castle at Disney World's Magic Kingdom. And Now, the Rest of the Story
A week or so ago, we posted a video of a guy who parked illegally in a handicapped spot. Somehow, his car was covered in some sort of blue substance to teach him a lesson. We couldn't really tell what that substance was, as the video wa kind of grainy. Here's a much better video - showing a group of people plastering the car with blue and white Stick-It notes. Looks like they have more uses than we knew. Check out the whole video - it's worth watching. (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); LIKE: ADDIKTION & Find more: ADDIKTION.NET Posted by ADDIKTION on Friday, July 3, 2015

Not Again... Yes Again!
Years from now, psychologists will do studies to figure out why the Sharknado franchise is so popular. By then, we'll be up to Sharknado 47. The folks behind the franchise are sequel geniuses. And they talk about it in the trailer: "While those other movies wait years, even decades, to release sequels, we give the people what they want as soon as it’s sort of ready…" Sharknado took aim at Los Angeles. Sharknado 2 took a bite out of the Big Apple. And now Sharknado 3 is coming, taking aim at the entire East Coast. And guess what? You and millions of others will be watching. You know you will.

Animal Park's Got Talent!
Okay, this is stupid and dumb - but I guarantee it will make you laugh. Some folks were driving through an animal park when they came up to a zebra. This wasn't any ordinary zebra. This was the Mister Ed of zebras, and he was willing to sing for his supper. Like I said, stupid, and dumb. But funny!

Step Aside, XXL - Regular Mike is in the House
Let's face it, Magic Mike XXL sets a very high bar for men. Chiseled, easy on the eyes, the subjects of fantasy. For the rest of us, that sets the standard impossibly high. So thank goodness for this answer to Magic Mike XXL. Regular Mike M/L. That's more like it. Guys, I think we can live up to this, don't you?

Swimming with a Sea Turtle
The foks at the World Wildlife Fund released a video over the weekend that captures the majesty of sea turtles while driving home a point about saving the environment. They strapped a GoPro camera onto a sea turtle's back and recorded its swim along the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It's a very cool video, and if you can find a way to loop it, I'll bet it would make a great relaxation device as well. (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); To our supporters: Thank you for taking action to help save the Great Barrier Reef! It’s easy to understand why the imminent ban on dumping in the reef is important, but videos like this bring it all to life. Her Name is Heavenly Joy, and Boy, Is She Ever
Every once in a while, something joyous happens on America's Got Talent. Here's one of those moments. A 5-year-old named Heavenly Joy wowed the judges and the audience with her audition piece, singing a song from Frozen and tap dancing too. What's even more impressive is the way she handled herself in the spotlight, and with the judges - and what she plans to do with the money if she wins the big prize of $1,000,000. An amazing kid!

Channing Busts a Buncha Moves
Channing Tatum's Magic Mike XXL is doing okay at the box office, partly due to his dancing skills. But he's not all about the bump-and-grind. Oh no. The folks at Vanity Fair challenged him to do seven different dance moves in 30 seconds. The Running Man, the Twist, the Funky Chicken, the Hula, the Pony and the Robot, capped off with some Voguing. Check it out, ladies and gents. This guy's the real deal!

Barack Obama, the Voice of America
President Obama visited Tennessee this week to talk some more about Obamacare. He ran into a guy at a town meeting whose real name was Davy Crockett. The President pointed out that Davy wasn't wearing a beaver cap - Davy was very nice and said he had one at home. If POTUS were to do a little fact-checking, I think he'd find that it was a racoon cap. But that's not important. Davy had a problem with Social Security, and the president promised to look into it. Then he sang a snippet from the theme song to the old TV serie, Davy Crockett. He's been doing a lot of singing lately. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he ended up hosting The Voice when his term is done...

Bruce Springsteen Jumps On Brian Wilson's Encore
So this happened. Brian Wilson was playing a concert at the PNC Banks Arts Center in New Jersey on Wednesday. In the middle of his encore, Bruce Springsteen - the King of New Jersey - popped up on stage and started singing harmony on "Barbara Ann." The boys in the band were able to coax him centerstage for "Surfin' USA," and he even strapped on a guitar to trade a few licks with the other guitarists. Check out the video - the guy shooting doesn't seem to realize exactly what he was capturing, and it's a little shaky, but you get the idea. And check out the backstage picture of Brian and Bruce underneath it.   (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Bruce joined Brian Wilson on stage for surprise performances of "Barbara Ann" and "Surfin USA" last night in New Jersey. Here they are backstage with Blondie Chaplin before the show. Posted by Bruce Springsteen on Thursday, July 2, 2015

Now You Can Stuff Your Own Donnie T
This one's just too funny not to share. An artist in Mexico got pretty upset with what Donald Trump had to say about his country and the country's inhabitants. So Dalton Avalos Ramirez of Reynosa, Mexico made a pinata in The Donald's likeness. Not just a little one either. This one's life-size. Let's have some fun and have one sent to each of the other Republican presidential candidates so they can start beating it up - the way many of them have been beating up the pinatas inspiration lately.     #DonaldTrump #MexicoTeOdia #OjalayPierdasTuCandidatura #EresUnAsco A photo posted by Piñateria Ramirez (@pinateria_ramirez) on Jun 18, 2015 at 7:05pm PDT

Liev Schreiber Talks Voiceovers
Liev Schreiber's one of those guys you've seen in movies and liked in movies, but you can never remember his name. Yeah, he's that guy. He was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the other night to talk about the return of his series, Ray Donovan, to Showtime next weekend. And he and Jimmy started talking about the voiceover work Liev's done over the years. Like the time he played the Frito Bandito on the unemployment line. But the fun one that he recreated was doing the play-by-play on the 1936 X-Treme Games (which didn't of course happen). Check it out.

Thank You, Donald Trump, from America
Don't let the headline fool you. It's not the country saying thank you to the Republican presidential candidate. It's the actress. America Ferrara of Ugly Betty fame. She wrote a thank you letter to Donald Trump for all the nasty remarks he made about Mexicans. In a very polite way, she pretty much told him those words could easily bite him in el culo. “Dear Donald. You’ve said some pretty offensive things about Latino immigrants recently, and I think they’re worth addressing. Because, you know, this is the United States of America, where I have the right to speak up even if I’m not a billionaire. Isn’t that awesome? “Remarks like yours will serve brilliantly to energize Latino voters and increase turnout on election day against you and any other candidate who runs on a platform of hateful rhetoric... You are running for President in a country where the Latino population grew by over 49 percent from 2000-2012, while the rest of the country grew by 5.8 percent.” By the way, The Donald isn't backing down. Because he's The Donald, after all.

"The Authorities Would Tell Us!"
If you're a Walking Dead fan, you by now know about the prequel series, Fear the Walking Dead. It's about the time when whatever causes humans to become zombie and start killing other humans hits the planet. AMC released another trailer for it last week, and it's less frightening than the one before it that showed a guy running down the street, shirt wide open, trying to keep his pants from falling down. This one shows a kid talking about "reports" he's hearing, and a mother figure telling him he spends too much time on the Internet. Sounds more like a reality show if you ask me... I don't know. Maybe you'll get something out of this?

Siri Gets Feisty
Aaron Paul's all over this one, and it's suddenly all the rage. The Breaking Bad star tweeted about something that seems to push Apple's digital assistant over the virtual brink. "What is zero divided by zero?" Technically, there's no answer, because you can't divide by zero, because division by zero is undefined. When you come right down to it, Siri's answer - while exhibiting a silicon chip on her shoulder - makes far more sense.   Ask Siri "what is zero divided by zero?" RIGHT. NOW. — Aaron Paul (@aaronpaul_8) June 30, 2015 Siri's response: “Imagine that you have zero cookies, and you split them evenly among zero friends. How many cookies does each person get? See? It doesn’t make sense... And Cookie Monster is sad that there are no cookies... And you are sad that you have no friends.” If you want to try it yourself,it apparently only works on iOS8...
